The shapes are abstract but we can feel the heat from the Sun, the briskness of the wind, the spray of the sea and the smell of Autumn leaves in Sofia Lucas's paintings. Her works awaken in us feelings we cannot explain but which attract us and embrace us. The fluid, organic shapes seem to float freely through the canvas, anchored only by the textures of different materials, such as leaves, flowers and various papers which complement the lightness of the drawings. The use of the written word, more as a means of graphic expression than a way to convey any type of content, introduces a new mysterious dimension to these paintings, as though this written drawing is speaking to us in a faraway language, which we recognise but do not understand.
However, the colours are what makes our gaze pause, where we can feel the true strength of Sofia Lucas's work. They are lively and profoundly evocative, and even when the artist uses more neutral shades, they convey energy and movement, blending and crashing into each other. It is with this language of colours, expanded by the grammar of textures, that Sofia Lucas tells us these stories about the places, emotions and people we wish to never forget.
